GUS PATRUNO • I found Tommy lying in the grass. He looked to me like he was just sleeping. I did not see any injuries on him, and he had a slight smile on his face. He looked very peaceful.

Tom Alley followed the men out and walked the ditch that had been the company’s right flank during the battle. Standing between the two abutting hedgerows, he looked down to the area where he had fired at the advancing Germans crawling up the ditch. Moving down the ditch, he came to the man he had killed. It was a German officer with a camouflaged smock. Alley removed his Luger pistol, holster, and belt, and returned to Carentan.

When he arrived he found many of the men were already asleep where they had sat down, exhausted from the sleepless days and adrenalinepumped fighting. Others were busy drowning their graphic memories in looted booze.
